Why do filtering and size charts matter for a clothing store?

Filtering and size charts matter because clothing shoppers arrive with a size in mind, and a store that cannot narrow by size or explain its sizing loses the sale or gets the return. Both features reduce the two costs that hit apparel stores hardest: abandoned browsing and returns.

Goth and alternative brands add a wrinkle: corsets, platform boots and custom-cut garments often size differently from mainstream clothes. A clear chart per garment type answers the question before the customer has to email you.

How do I set up product filtering on a Shopify collection page?

Install Shopify's free Search & Discovery app, open Filters, and add filters for the product options and metafields you want, such as size, colour, price and availability. Themes built on Online Store 2.0 then display those filters on collection and search pages automatically.

Filtering works only if your data is clean. Name the variant option exactly Size and Color across every product, and use consistent values, for example S not Small on some products. Inconsistent values create duplicate filter entries that confuse shoppers.

Which filters should a goth clothing store offer?

A goth clothing store should offer size, colour, price and availability first, then one or two style filters such as garment type or subgenre stored in metafields. More than six or seven filters overwhelms shoppers on mobile.

  • Size: the most-used filter in apparel; show availability so out-of-stock sizes are obvious.
  • Colour: keep to a controlled list; black comes in many shades, so group them.
  • Price: a range slider suits wide catalogues.
  • Style: a metafield such as subgenre lets shoppers filter to Victorian or punk pieces.

How do I add a size chart without an app?

Store the size chart as a rich-text product metafield or as a shared content page, then render it inside a native dialog element opened by a button on the product page. This needs no app and works on every device.

In the Shopify admin, create a product metafield definition custom.size_chart of type rich text, then fill it per garment type. The Liquid snippet reads it and shows the chart only when one exists.

{%- if product.metafields.custom.size_chart != blank -%}
  <button type="button" class="size-chart__open" onclick="document.getElementById('size-chart').showModal()">Size guide</button>
  <dialog id="size-chart">
    <form method="dialog"><button aria-label="Close size guide">Close</button></form>
    {{ product.metafields.custom.size_chart | metafield_tag }}
  </dialog>
{%- endif -%}

The dialog element traps focus and closes with the Escape key by default, so accessibility comes largely free.

How can a per-product size chart reduce returns?

A per-product size chart reduces returns by giving actual garment measurements for each item type, so customers compare against their own body or a garment they own. Generic charts leave shoppers guessing and lead to the wrong size being ordered.

Give measurements in both centimetres and inches, note whether sizing is true to size, and add a short fit note such as "corset runs small, size up". Return rates should be tracked before and after, so you can measure the effect on your own store rather than rely on general claims.

How do filtering and size charts fit into the wider store build?

Filtering and size charts belong to the same job: helping shoppers find the right item in the right size. They sit alongside navigation, covered in building a mega menu without an app, and should be checked when you evaluate a theme, as in what to look for in a dark fashion theme.

If your catalogue needs more than the native tools provide, such as filters driven by custom metafields or size charts that vary by variant, I build these as custom Shopify code. Email me your requirements or see my Shopify work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add filters to a Shopify collection page?

Install Shopify's free Search & Discovery app, add filters for size, colour, price and metafields, and an Online Store 2.0 theme will show them on collection pages.

Can I add a size chart to Shopify without an app?

Yes. Store the chart in a rich-text product metafield and display it in a native dialog element opened by a Size guide button on the product page.

Why are my Shopify filters showing duplicate sizes?

Duplicate filter values come from inconsistent option values, such as S on some products and Small on others. Standardise the option names and values across the catalogue.

Do size charts reduce returns?

A clear per-garment size chart helps customers choose the right size, which should lower size-related returns. Track your own return rate before and after to confirm the effect.
